Calls for House Select Committee on Benghazi Growing

By Ben Barrack

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) began calling for a House Select Committee to investigate Benghazi three months after the attack. He has been met with resistance by House leadership that has demonstrated more interest in pushing Barack Obama’s immigration agenda.

Wolf’s bill, H.Res.36 has 161 sponsors. This week, after a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing scheduled for July 18th was being canceled, Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX), who sits on the committee, issued a press release, which said in part:

Congressman Steve Stockman (R-TX 36) will seek to force a vote in Congress on creating a select committee to investigate the Obama administration’s handling of the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Following the cancellation of a House hearing this week on the Benghazi attacks, Rep. Stockman announced his intention to file a discharge petition to force a vote on Rep. Frank Wolf’s H. Res. 36, which would establish a Select Committee to investigate the Benghazi attacks.

“Congressman Wolf has fearlessly led the fight for justice on this issue. The whole nation owes Congressman Wolf a deep debt of gratitude. Some House Democrats now appear to be openly interfering with the investigation and intimidating witnesses, which only raises more questions about the White House’s involvement,” said Stockman. “The only way we’re going to get a clean and thorough investigation is by forcing a vote with a discharge petition.”

Beginning on July 16th, Rep. Wolf began going to the House floor with a “Benghazi Question of the Day”. During his speech on the 16th, Wolf pledged to do this each day until Congress recesses in two weeks:

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) today issued the first in a series of statements to be issued before Congress breaks for its August recess in hopes of finding out what happened in Benghazi last September when the U.S. consulate and a CIA annex were attacked, resulting in the death of four Americans, including a U.S. ambassador.

Day 3, July 18th:

Day 4, July 19th:

As for what the makeup of a Select Committee might look like, Wolf’s government page provides a few clues:

…in December 2012, I introduced a bill to create a House Select Committee on the Terrorist Attack in Benghazi, which would have full subpoena power to fully investigate what happened in Benghazi and the Obama Administration’s response. The committee would be comprised of the chairmen and ranking members of the committees on Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, Judiciary, Homeland Security and Government Reform and Oversight, with other members appointed by House leaders based on expertise.

If Wolf’s version of the bill is adopted, here are the chairmen and ranking members who would be on the committee:

House Intelligence Committee
Chairman: Mike Rogers (R-MI)
Ranking Member: C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD)

House Foreign Affairs Committee
Chairman: Ed Royce (R-CA)
Ranking Member: Eliot Engel (D-NY)

Eilot Engel: He will defend and protect... Susan Rice.

House Armed Services Committee
Chairman: Buck McKeon (R-CA)
Ranking Member: Adam Smith (D-WA)

House Judiciary Committee
Chairman: Bob Goodlatte (R-VA)
Ranking Member: John Conyers (D-MI), registered with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Caucus and defender of the Muslim Brotherhood-inspired Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). America was attacked in Benghazi by, among others, the Muslim Brotherhood-inspired Ansar al-Sharia.

John Conyers, registered Socialist and defender of CAIR, which was spawned by Muslim Brotherhood, which spawned Ansar al-Sharia, which attacked Benghazi on 9/11/12

House Homeland Security Committee
Chairman: Michael McCaul (R-TX)
Ranking Member: Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), also registered with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Caucus.

House Government Reform and Oversight Committee
Chairman: Darrell Issa (R-CA)
Ranking Member: Elijah Cummings (D-MD), also registered with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Caucus. Runs interference for Obama administration at every turn. Perhaps most despicably, he looked the Brian Terry family in the eye and promised to seek justice, holding everyone involved accountable, “no matter where they are”. Cummings went back on his word and went out of his way to defend Eric Holder and the Obama administration, voting ‘no’ on holding the Attorney General in contempt of Congress. The empty promises Cummings made to a grieving Terry family were made to the grieving families of Benghazi’s victims. Don’t look for him to cooperate.

Elijah Cummings: The worst kind of liar.

Here is Cummings in June of 2011 pledging to help the Terry family before spending the next year helping Obama and Holder instead:

According to Wolf, additional members for the select committee would be appointed by “House leaders based on expertise”. Here are a few suggestions for House leadership (assuming they can take their eye off the immigration agenda for a few minutes):

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Judiciary / Oversight / Homeland Security
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), Judiciary / Oversight
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Judiciary / Oversight
Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID), Judiciary
Rep. Steve King (R-IA), Judiciary
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Intelligence
Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Oversight
Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-PA), Oversight / Homeland Security
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Judiciary
Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), Foreign Affairs / Judiciary

As for the Democrats, considering there is a Muslim element to all of this, perhaps the two Muslims in Congress – Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN) – could be on the committee. It’d be instructive to see them defend the Brotherhood.

Wolf did not issue Benghazi Question #8 from the House Floor but did issue it via a statement on his website.

Based on the content of Wolf’s Question #8, we thought this video would make for a good juxtaposition:
