It Begins: Israel Returns Fire at Syrian Army Positions after Mortar Hits Golan

The IDF returned fire at a Syrian army position along the northern border Thursday afternoon, after a mortar shell struck Israeli territory.

The army said it fired a Tamuz anti-tank missile at the source of the fire.

Sirens were heard throughout throughout the Golan Heights earlier, as a mortar shell had struck in an open field in the northern Golan. No damage or injuries were reported.

The military added that at it appears to have been stray fire and not directed at Israel.

Nevertheless, Israel has vowed to take a zero-tolerance approach to any fire into Israel.

It is the latest spillover from the Syrian civil war, as rebels, among them Al Qaeda’s Syrian branch the Nusra Front, have been involved in fierce clashes with pro-regime forces for control of the Quneitra area bordering Israel.

Several mortar shells have hit Israeli territory in recent weeks, and the IDF shot down a Syrian drone last week, after it strayed into Israeli airspace.
