Massive Increase In 2020 Murder Rate, “Unprecedented” In Recent History

From 2019 to 2020, the murder rate increased by what the New York Post reports in an “unprecedented” increase.

Murder rates saw a “historic” increase in 2020 compared to 2019, with more than 1,200 additional killings year-over-year in a sample of 34 American cities, according to a study released Monday.

“The coronavirus pandemic, continuing incidents of police violence and rising homicide and violent crime rates each pose massive policy challenges in their own right, but the interplay between them creates even more difficult decisions for policymakers,” states a report from the National Commission of COVID-19 and Criminal Justice (NCCCJ). “Despite this difficulty, leaders at all levels of government should take bold action in responding to all three crises.”

Homicide rates jumped by 30 percent from 2019 to 2020, while gun assault and aggravated assault rates climbed 8 percent and 6 percent, respectively, experts found.

“Homicide rates were higher during every month of 2020 relative to rates from the previous year,” the report states, calling the 30 percent surge “a large and troubling increase that has no modern precedent.” (source)

This trend is a concern, and some may thing it is just a temporary effect, but the answer is simple.

The pandemic is destroying more than lives- it is annihilating people’s finances. When people go poor, since America is a society where one must have money to participate, it locks one out of society. When this happens, people turn to crime to get what they need.

The trend to look for here is not murder, but crime. Crime does not pay in the moral sense, but it can for a while in the temporal sense, and as people largely have turned away from religion and God, lacking a moral backing, it becomes a lot easier for them to engage in crime as a concept, and the pressure of bills and life make the temptation more attractive than ever before.

Crime is going to rise in the coming years, not because of COVID, but as an effect of the economic destruction that COVID has exposed. Desperate people with nothing to lose and who see little value in life will have no problem shooting another man if it means feeding themselves, and especially if they do not believe there are any consequences for their actions.
