Morocco Woman forced to Marry her rapist; commits Suicide

In Morocco, a girl whose rape in the west would include the added charge of rape of a minor was actually ordered to marry her rapist. In essence, she was the one punished for the rape; she ultimately committed suicide over it, according to Al Arabiya:

A 16-year-old Moroccan girl has committed suicide after a judge ordered her to marry her rapist, according to Moroccan media reports.

Last year Amina’s parents filed charges against their daughter’s rapist, a man 10 years older than her but it was only recently that a judge in the northern city of Tangier decided that instead of punishing him, the two must be married.

The court’s decision to forcibly marry Amina to her rapist was supposed to “resolve” the damage of sexual violation against her, but it led to more suffering in the unwelcoming home of her rapist/husband’s family.

Traumatized by the painful experience of rape, Amina decided to end her life by consuming rat poison in the house of her husband’s family, according to the Moroccan daily al-Massae.

In the West, the left comes to the aid of women who want free contraception and accuses anyone who opposes such a notion of waging a “war against women.” Meanwhile, news of a minor committing suicide after being raped and forced to marry her rapist, is met with silence.

Yet, women’s rights groups would rather defend Sandra Fluke instead of Amina.

In case you’re wondering, Morocco was indeed one of the countries that reaped the sour fruit borne during the Arab Spring. Islamists there won that country’s spring elections last year. Though not necessarily related, Amina’s case is precisely the kind of thing that happens in countries where Sharia law rules the day.
