While the saying “demographics is destiny” is often used by those with racial or nationalistic impulses, it is also a very true statement. Any nation, community or area is defined by her people, and economy, politics, and government change with the people. If the people change, the area changes, for better or worse. This is an observation throughout human history and favors or hinders no group.
The Boomers for a long time were the largest bloc in society. However, the Pew Research forum has found the formal change has begun where Millennials are now by demographic size overtaking the Boomers.
Millennials have surpassed Baby Boomers as the nation’s largest living adult generation, according to population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. As of July 1, 2019 (the latest date for which population estimates are available), Millennials, whom we define as ages 23 to 38 in 2019, numbered 72.1 million, and Boomers (ages 55 to 73) numbered 71.6 million. Generation X (ages 39 to 54) numbered 65.2 million and is projected to pass the Boomers in population by 2028.
The Millennial generation continues to grow as young immigrants expand its ranks. Boomers – whose generation was defined by the boom in U.S. births following World War II – are aging and their numbers shrinking in size The generations defined as the number of deaths among them exceeds the number of older immigrants arriving in the country. This is also very bad for the US. Remember that Boomers control 57% of the wealth, and Millennials just 3%. The latter also has no hope of earning that money back.
What one is seeing here is the beginnings of a revolution. The Boomer American way of life is passing away, and it is being replaced by the anger and dispossession of the Millennials, who are demanding answer to their plight, and very understandably so.
The Boomers may have shouted for “equal rights for all,” but this cry is lots on the Millennials, who watched their future be stolen from them. They do not want “to fight for a system that they believe has defrauded them, and in many, many ways it legitimately has done so.
The future is going to be very interesting.
