The Israeli air force has bombed Damascus and various other areas, with the Israeli government stating that the strikes are being done to prevent attacks on Israel by Syrian rebels, as we read in Ynet:

According to reports, Air Force jets attacked at noon (Sunday) the Al-Maza military airport in Damascus, Halakhala in southern Syria – where there is also a central airport – as well as the rural areas of Daraa and As-Suwayda. Just this morning, rebels were photographed at Al-Maza, one of the main airfields of the Syrian Air Force, which has also been attacked by Israel in the past. The Syrian “Voice of the Capital”, affiliated with the opposition, said that “Israel is systematically destroying all the brigades and battalions of the previous regime in southern Syria, while directly attacking all the air defense systems, missile depots and development and production institutes. Any place that participated, produced, or developed weapons that could threaten Israel.” Later, “Voice of the Capital” reported that talks are underway on a Russian-Israeli agreement to hand over strategic sites in the rural areas of Daraa and Quneitra to Israeli forces, mainly Tel al-Hara.

An hour later, the same website reported that Israeli attacks in the Damascus area continued. “The Israeli army has prepared a bank of targets that will be destroyed in the coming hours,” it reported, noting that, among other things, Republican Guard and 4th Division posts in the Qasioun area were attacked.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Israel had penetrated various areas in the Quneitra countryside using tanks and armored vehicles, as far as the a-Raqad bridge. Israeli forces, according to the report, also approached civilian homes in the village of al-Hamidiya north of Quneitra. It was alleged that the forces shot and killed a young man from the town of Jabata in the northern Quneitra countryside, arrested all the residents of the village of Rassem a-Rawadi and took them to the village school.

Last night, according to foreign reports, Air Force fighter jets carried out waves of strikes around Damascus, with the aim of destroying advanced weapons arrays and weapons production facilities that could fall into the hands of the rebels. In addition, a chemical weapons depot in Syria was attacked last night. The IDF updated this morning that “in light of the events in Syria and in accordance with the assessment of the situation and the possibility of armed men entering the buffer zone, the IDF has deployed forces in the buffer zone and at a number of points necessary for defense, in order to ensure the security of the Golan Heights communities and Israeli citizens.”

The army emphasized that “the IDF does not intervene in the events taking place in Syria and will continue to act as long as necessary to preserve the buffer zone and protect the State of Israel and its citizens.” According to reports, the IDF has conveyed warning messages to the rebels who occupy the Syrian Golan Heights and overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad not to cross the Alpha Line, from which the demilitarized zone begins.
