The government of Pakistan has invited Iran to join the alliance with Turkey, the second most armed country in NATO. According to Haaretz:
Iran is considering whether to accept an invitation to join the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, signed so far by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Mehdi Rahimi, the head of the Iranian Parliament News Agency, made this claim in an interview with Al-Mayadeen television, which is closely associated with Hezbollah.
The Iranian official said Tehran was considering the invitation and praised “the efforts of West Asian countries to create a regional security umbrella.” Iran, he said, “has long supported an initiative like this.”
The three signatory states have yet to confirm Rahimi’s dramatic assertion. Even the Iranian Foreign Ministry has so far exercised its right to remain silent.
Before Rahimi made his remarks, Syria was also reportedly “weighing” an invitation to join the new regional pact. Egypt is also believed to be a candidate to join – even though several pro-Qatari media outlets have reported that Saudi Arabia opposes Cairo’s membership.
This is all about getting Iran to join NATO’s sphere of influence. Turkey is the second most armed country in NATO. By Turkey inviting Iran into an alliance, it is effectively inviting Iran to join NATO’s sphere. This would accomplish several things: get NATO to have freedom of movement within and influence regarding the Strait of Hormuz; cut Russia off from its ally on the Caspian Sea and thus prevent Russia from receiving Iranian military technology in the war in Ukraine; and thirdly, it gives Turkey a direct land route into Central Asia, and thus it gives NATO an unfettered route from Turkey into Central Asia. Turkey wants to establish its pan-Turkic bloc of power, and this would only be possible if Turkey has Iran as an ally so that it can have a direct accessway into Central Asia.
