European leaders do not believe that Putin really desires peace, and are only playing along with the hopes that Trump will eventually turn on Russia, as we read in article published by The Reporter:

European leaders believe that peace talks between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, initiated by Washington, are unlikely to lead to real progress, Politico reports, citing EU sources.

According to the publication, European capitals are convinced that the negotiations could end in failure, and are betting that this will push the White House to toughen its position towards Moscow.

“Europe’s plan is to play along with Trump, praise him and indulge him until he himself realizes that Putin does not want the war in Ukraine to end.”

As preparations for a possible meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy took place, EU heads of state held “a series of emergency talks” on Tuesday. As Politico notes, participants “expressed deep skepticism that the Kremlin would negotiate in good faith, but were optimistic that Washington would punish Russia if Putin proved the main obstacle to peace.”
