Taiwan’s drone industry is now rising more than ever, and its taking inspiration from Ukraine’s drone industry. Because NATO is using Ukraine as a testing ground for technology against the Russian military, Ukrainian drones are being marketed as “battle tested,” and they are the of the highest demand within the NATO world. Taiwan wants Ukrainian drones to use against the Chinese military in the case of a Sino-Taiwanese war. For this reason, Taiwanese are now serving the Ukrainian military to gain experience on the battlefield against Russian forces (who work closely with China’s military) and Russia’s drones, to then bring that experience back to Taiwan in preparation for a potential conflict with China. The New York Times recently interviewed a Taiwanese man who goes by “Lee” who is serving in the Ukrainian armed forces to learn about drone warfare:
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Lee delivered parcels in Taiwan for a living, hung out with friends or played video games after work. He knew of Ukraine only from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a game set in the Chernobyl nuclear zone.
Now, he is serving in the Ukrainian Army on the battlefield and hoping that what he has learned about drone warfare can help not only Ukraine but, someday, his own homeland.
“The war will happen one day with China, and then my experience will be valuable,” Lee, 37, said in an interview at a coffee shop in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, while on leave from the front. He asked to be identified by only his first name, in keeping with military protocol.
Lee is part of an emerging, informal network of ordinary citizens and defense companies building partnerships between Ukraine and Taiwan. Driven by the threat of conquest by much larger hostile neighbors, they are sharing lessons, resources and battle-tested technology.
Its interesting how the New York Times is referring to Lee as if he is just some regular guy who once a delivery man but just so happens to now be in the Ukrainian military learning about drones, as if he is not an agent for Taiwan and America to learn drone warfare to prepare against China. The Times reports that “unofficial exchanges of military technology and expertise are occurring among executives of defense companies and volunteers like Lee. The two governments have also inched closer together as Taiwan has sent humanitarian and reconstruction aid to Ukraine, and Ukrainian lawmakers have visited Taipei, Taiwan’s capital.”
What is happening in Taiwan is similar to what is happening in Germany, where an agreement has been made to get Ukrainian military personal to train the German military. RT reports:
Ukrainian service members will train German troops in drone warfare as well as the use of modern command and control technologies as part of a new program, several German media outlets have reported.
The Ukraine conflict has seen the mass deployment of strike and reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by both Ukrainian and Russian forces. Their use has fundamentally changed battlefield dynamics, rendering many traditional approaches obsolete.
The Times also speaks of how “one rank-and-file Ukrainian soldier who vacationed in Taiwan with his girlfriend was invited to speak to representatives of the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee in the Taiwanese Parliament. The soldier, who pilots drones, said he spent hours last summer describing the war in Ukraine. He asked that his name be withheld because he had not been authorized to speak to the Taiwanese government or to The New York Times.” The New York Times is talking about this guy as if he is just some random Ukrainian vacationer who just so happened to be in Taiwan and has just so happened to be giving drone advise to the Taiwanese. This is not a coincidence, but a reflection of how Ukraine is being used as a testing ground (and the Ukrainians as, quite sadly, guinea pigs) to test out weaponry against Russia to then prepare Europe (especially Germany) against Russia and the Taiwanese against China. Taiwan is now being used as a major hub to export drones into Ukraine, as the Times reports:
Taiwan exported 70,372 drones to the Czech Republic and 31,711 to Poland in 2025, said Samara Duerr, a national security analyst at the Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology, a research organization in Taiwan backed by the Taiwanese government. Most ultimately wound up in Ukraine, she said, many through donations from charitable organizations to the Ukrainian Army.
Drones in the West and Taiwan are now being marketed as “battle tested” in Ukraine as a way to describe their efficiency, since the biggest conventional war right now is in Ukraine, and its a war between NATO technology and logistics (through Ukraine) and Russia’s military. As the Times reports:
In Taiwan, international defense contractors market drone models to the military as battle-tested in Ukraine, but not sold directly by Ukrainian manufacturers. Taiwanese manufacturers have also sent drones to Ukraine for testing, said Gene Su, the general manager of Thunder Tiger, a major drone company in Taichung, a city in central Taiwan.
Numerous Ukrainian drone facilities have been popping up, and at least one is in Taiwan. Zelensky, according to the Times, “told journalists in March that he knew of at least 10 production facilities that had sprung up abroad where international defense companies and some Ukrainian firms were making Ukrainian-designed drones. A senior Ukrainian official and a defense industry representative, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue, said one such factory was in Taiwan.”
Ukraine is a technological and logistical laboratory to prepare Europe for a war with Russia. Hence why the Germans are building up to become the biggest military force in Europe. They want to create a pan-European military powerhouse led by Berlin that will be so robust that it will be a massive threat to Russia. The revival of German militarism is to the applause of the Americans who, for years, have been pushing for military spending in Germany. So, both the Americans and Europeans are watching Ukraine, testing their weaponry through the Ukrainian military against the Russians, to take note of their failures and strengths and adapt accordingly. For example, Germany sent lots of its Leopard 2 tanks into Ukraine and watched as they got destroyed on the battlefield versus the Russians. The Germans took note of their tank’s shortcomings and adapted, creating the new Leopard 2A8. Germany has just recently agreed to sell 54 of this variant of tank to the Norwegians. Lithuania, where German troops have been deployed for the first time since World War Two, has appropriated 44 advanced Leopard 2A8 tanks and will be assembling them within its own factories.
Ukrainian drone operators are no joke. In the recent Hedgehog military games in Estonia, a 100-man enemy unit which consisted of just ten Ukrainian drone operators were able to wipe out two entire NATO battalions within just a 24 hour period, thanks to the experience of the ten Ukrainian drone operators. The incident shocked NATO so much, that a NATO commander said, “We are f***ed.” Hence why Ukrainian drone operators are in huge demand in Europe. The Germans are working to fulfill their dream of a Europe led by Berlin in what would essentially be the fourth reich. This is the plan of the Americans, to enable the Germans to dominate Europe. Steve Whitaker, the US ambassador to NATO, declared at the Berlin Security Conference: “I look forward to the day when Germany comes to the United States and says that we’re ready to take over the Supreme Allied Commander position. I think we’re a long way away from that, but I look forward to those discussions.” So the plan is quite clearly set: green light the revival of German power against the Russians. Moreover, the Americans want to use the Japanese and Taiwan as weapons against China.
