As can often be the case, the most revealing truth in a news article is buried at the end. In an article about the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) labeling Ansar al-Sharia in Libya a terrorist organization, the last paragraph reads:

Libya’s internationally recognised government has been forced to take refuge in the country’s far east to escape a mainly Islamist coalition which seized control of Tripoli at the end of August.

That actually should be the source for the headline. Ansar al-Sharia, the group blamed for the 2012 Benghazi attacks that resulted in the death of a U.S. Ambassador and three other Americans, has pledged allegiance to ISIS and is running Libya.

This should be surprising to no one. In fact, a group identified as Ansar Minbar, which was essentially Ansar al-Sharia, used Facebook to call for attacks in Libya as the Cairo attack on the U.S. embassy was taking place. Here is a screen shot from that facebook page. Note the ISIS logo inside the map of Libya on the top right and the ISIS flag in the bottom right-hand corner:

The UNSC is now conceding that Libya has descended into a terror state. This is relevant for many reasons. One such reason is that the UNSC supported NATO’s role in the overthrow of Gadhafi.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday added to its terror list a Libyan Islamist group accused of involvement in the 2012 attack on the US mission in Benghazi that killed the ambassador and three other Americans.

The council blacklisted Ansar al-Sharia for its ties to al-Qaeda, slapping an arms embargo, assets freeze and global travel ban on the extremists at the request of Britain, France and the United States.

The measure targets Ansar al-Sharia Benghazi and its sister group Ansar al-Sharia Derna, which both have links to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and other violent radical outfits.

In October, Ansar al-Sharia Derna pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil), the violent Islamist group that has seized control of territory in Iraq and Syria.

All of this was predictable. The U.S. action in Libya was about empowering the Muslim Brotherhood and creating an Islamic State. This, from 2011:

Speaking of the Muslim Brotherhood, it’s supporting another uprising just across the border from Egypt, in Libya. Not only has this been confirmed by Wikileaks and several other sources but al-Qaradawi himself has left no doubt that he supports the overthrow of Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi; he’s even gone so far as issuing a fatwa that authorizes Gadhafi’s military to assassinate the Libyan dictator.

While in Jamaica on June 23, 2011, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke about the desire to remove Libya’s Muammar Gadhafi from power. Here is the audio:

Since Gadhafi’s removal a few months later, the Benghazi attack happened, the U.S. has abandoned its embassy in Tripoli and ISIS is rapidly gaining power in that country. In fact, as Shoebat.com reported, the Ansar al-Sharia flag in 2012 matched exactly the ISIS flag seen today. While ISIS (or Da’ish) declared a Caliphate in 2014, it’s been in existence since 2011 or 2012.

It’s worth noting that in March of this year, Shoebat.com reported on the ISIS human slaughterhouses in Syria that dated back three years at the time.

Ansar al-Sharia in Derna pledging allegiance to ISIS gets us even closer to ISIS being involved in the Benghazi attacks.

What’s even more absurd is that U.S. politicians still refuse to learn from this recent history. ISIS is strongest in Iraq and Syria. Yet, just this past September, both the U.S. House and Senate each voted to arm Syria’s rebels in order to remove Bashar al-Assad from power.

The removal of Assad is an even bigger formula for disaster than was the removal of Gadhafi. Yet, it’s full speed ahead.

Here is an excerpt from one report about the UNSC’s decision to sign off on NATO’s action against Gadhafi in 2011:

…the United Nations Security Council on Thursday voted to allow foreign forces — meaning, in practice, NATO — to pick up where the rebels left off.

The Security Council resolution, antiseptically, authorizes the enforcement of a no-fly zone over Libyan airspace. As senior airmen involved in the enforcement of earlier no-fly zones told Danger Room last week, there is no such thing as an antiseptic no-fly zone. The council’s call for “all necessary measures” to ground Gadhafi’s warplanes and helicopters and to “protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack” means that countries enforcing the U.N. mandate are at war with Gadhafi. Nothing less.

Today, the UNSC has a mess on its hands in Libya after signing on to creating that mess.
