Many on the right have praised the Trump adminstration for getting “tough” on immigration. But what does this really mean? To the contrary, Trump has not gotten “tough” on immigration, but rather has continued the status quo largely, allowing for more migrants to come in while those who he has barred have generally been people fleeing actual conflicts and war started for geopolitical or social reasons. Now the current Trump cabinet Chief-of-Staff says that the US is ‘desperate’ for more migrants.
“We are desperate — desperate — for more people,” Mulvaney said. “We are running out of people to fuel the economic growth that we’ve had in our nation over the last four years. We need more immigrants.”
The Trump administration wants those immigrants to come in a “legal fashion,” Mulvaney said, according to the recording. (source)
The issue is not about migration, but about keeping the financial and economic system alive.
Migrants are essentially being used to continue the pyramid-like structure of the current economic paradigm as well as provide cheap labor. Without them, the system would naturally collapse. Thus, he is correct- the US desperately needs more migrants to keep the current imbalanced system going.
The entire “migration” issue is just a political football. It does not mean anything, save to incite passions and get votes without making any tangible differences in anything. One should expect the current paradigm to continue and intensify, likely up to a major global conflict, at which point the same migrants and their children will be used as cannon fodder for soldiers on the front lines.
