Some people have been hopeful that a vaccine would emerge quickly to stop the spread of COVID-19. Gilead Sciences, one of the companies which has been working on this, recently ran trials about the drug, for which as ThompsonReuters reports has failed miserably.
ilead Sciences Inc’s experimental coronavirus drug failed its first randomised clinical trial, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing draft documents published accidentally by the World Health Organization.
Trading in the shares of the company was halted after they fell 6%.
The Chinese trial showed the antiviral remdesivir did not improve patients’ condition or reduce the pathogen’s presence in the bloodstream, the report https://on.ft.com/2VumJIA said.
Researchers studied 237 patients, giving the drug to 158 and comparing their progress with the remaining 79. The drug also showed significant side effects in some, which meant 18 patients were taken off it, according to the Financial Times.
Interest in Gilead’s drug had been high as there are currently no approved treatments or preventive vaccines for COVID-19, and doctors are desperate for anything that might alter the course of the disease that attacks the lungs and can shut down other organs in extremely severe cases.
The company is testing the drug in multiple trials and highly anticipated trial results from a study involving 400 patients hospitalized with severe cases of the illness are expected later this month.
Remdesivir, which previously failed as a treatment for Ebola, is being tried against COVID-19 because it is designed to disable the mechanism by which certain viruses, including the new coronavirus, make copies of themselves and potentially overwhelm their host’s immune system. (source)
Gilead Sciences for those who may remember is the company which manufactures PreP, which is the HIV antiviral drug marketed to sodomites as a “preparation” method so that anticipating sodomizing other men who have the HIV virus, by taking antivirals before it helps to reduce the risk of transmitting the sickness.
There is a lot of hope that things will get better, but no proof has been shown so far. Instead, the greatest hope is not in what some company can do so that people can ‘get back to normal’, but rather in changing one’s lifestyle and habits.
Perhaps instead of drugs, people need to think about health, wellness, and family, and companies need to be forced to re-align themselves so that instead of completely exploiting their workers, they value them as people who are the reason for their success.
A lot of the economic problems being blamed on COVID-19 are not accurate. Rather, the disease is just one part of the failure to build a sustainable society, choosing instead short-term profits at the expense of the longer term. Pandemics happen on their own, but poor planning is man’s own fault.
The problem is not the disease. It is the social attitudes which the disease is just exposing by its presence.
