Lois Lerner seeking Immunity from… Innocence?

“Because I’m asserting my right not to testify, I know that some people will assume that I’ve done something wrong; I have not. One of the basic functions of the Fifth amendment is to protect innocent individuals and that is the protection I am invoking today.” – Lois Lerner in front of the House Oversight Committee, May 22, 2013

Lerner: wants immunity from being found... Innocent?

Lerner: wants immunity from being found… Innocent?

While invoking her fifth amendment right last year, former Director of IRS Exempt Organizations, Lois Lerner insisted that she was innocent. Now, when being called back to testify, she’s jockeying for immunity. Uh, if she’s innocent, why does she need immunity? Should we add perjury about not doing anything wrong to the list of charges that are mounting against her?

Yesterday, we learned that Lois Lerner was being called back to testify in front of the House Oversight committee on March 5th. Last night, we learned that her attorneys were declining the invitation unless she is granted immunity (immunity from what we don’t know, since her testimony last year included the line, “I have not done anything wrong”). Today, the Oversight Committee is threatening her with Contempt of Congress.

Via Newsmax:

Lois Lerner, former director of the IRS Exempt Organizations Division, could be held in contempt of Congress if she continues to refuse to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which is investigating her possible role in targeting conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, Politico reported.

Several GOP lawmakers including Ohio’s Rep. Jim Jordan and Utah’s Jason Chaffetz told Politico that a contempt of Congress penalty was under consideration.

Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa said “We want her to come back and answer questions. We’ll see on contempt.”

Both Issa and Jordan mentioned above, were cc’d on the letter that was sent to members of Congress last week, demanding an investigation into Lerner’s granting the foundation of Malik Obama 501(c)(3) status expeditiously, retroactively, and illegally. The other congressman who sits on the committee and will be in receipt of the letter is Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC). A source his informed us that upon contacting Gowdy’s office, she was informed that the scandal is known by at least one person inside that office.
