Boko Haram jihadists attacked the village of Shaffa, but faced resilience from righteous vigilantes who killed eight of the jihadists. According to one report:
According to residents of the town, the sect attacked and killed 8 villagers along the Zhur forest before they headed to Shaffa town where they clashed with vigilante group, leaving 8 of the insurgents dead and 3 civilians.
When Boko Haram arrived to the town they were met with number of Muslims youths who wanted to join Boko Haram and vowed to eliminate all Christians in the village. They even informed Boko Haram as to who was Christian and which house belonged to Christians. One local said:
They started attacking Shindiffu village before coming down to Shaffa. When they came, they were chanting ‘Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar’ meaning God is great, and some of our people, who are of the same faith with them came out, chanting as well. …We ran into the mountains to hide until the morning when we managed to find our way to Yimirshika village where we are now taking refuge. …We were told that some Muslims in the town were showing Christians’ homes to the insurgents, who were setting them ablaze. As I am speaking to you, no church is standing in Shaffa and all houses belonging to people like Madu Wudiri, Engr. Mike Bata, Inspector Yautiya, Mallam James Mshelia, among others were also set ablaze. …The problem now is that we cannot communicate with our people because there is no service. It is very unfortunate
If this violence continues at the rate its going, its very possible that Nigeria will end in civil war, between Christians and Muslims.
