Reports are coming out that Turkish Armed Forces took over the government. Military jets are also flying over Turkish capital Ankara; military vehicles are also blocking bridges in Istanbul, reports say.

Yildirim says “it would be wrong to call it a coup” but that there has been an attempt by “part of the military”.

He describes it as an “illegal attempt” to seize power.

Turkey would never allow any “initiative that would interrupt democracy”, he said, and promised the perpetrators “will pay the highest price”.

Turkish president Tayyip Erdoğan is reportedly seeking asylum in Germany, as a military coup continues in Turkey, U.S. military sources tell NBC News.
