Erdogan is saying that the coup in Turkey will fail, affirming that Turkey would “overcome this invasion” and he exhorted all the people of Turkey to “gather in squares and see what this minority can do with their tanks and artillery against the people. … Throughout history those who make coups have been unsuccessful, and I absolutely believe that these will be unsuccessful as well.” He add that those responsible “will absolutely pay the price for this in heaviest manner.”
A statement from the military has been published and it states that the goal of the rebels is “to reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated.”
Military coups are actually quite common in Turkey. In 1960 there was a military coup d’etat in Turkey orchestrate by Colonel Alparslan Turkes. The purpose of this coup, in the words of Turkes, was “reestablishing the nationally desired democratic regime.” Cemal Gürsel, a Turkish army officer who supported the revolution stated that the “purpose and the aim of the coup is to bring the country with all speed to a fair, clean and solid democracy… I want to transfer power and the administration of the nation to the free choice of the people”. The rebels would eventually appoint Cemal to be the head of state in Turkey.
There was another military coup in 1971 that was done in response to violence and societal chaos that was taking place as a result of Turkey’s poor economy. The military leader, Memduh Tagmac, pushed the current prime minister, Suleyman Demirel, to step down, accusing him of driving the country into anarchy. The military demanded the formation of a “strong and credible government…. inspired by Ataturk’s views.” Demirel stepped down and the military appointed Nihat Erim, a member of the right-wing Republican People’s Party, to rule the country. Political volatileness continued on, with Turkey changing prime ministers 11 times in the 1970s. There was another coup in 1980 and another in 1997.
The coup is said to be now weakening. What will be the end result? Most likely Erdogan will use the coup to establish absolute indiscriminate despotism; many will die in this situation. It would not surprise me that the Turkish government conspired to do this revolution in order to increase the power of the State. Lets not forget that a few years ago Turkey organized a massacre in Kessab in order to make an excuse to enter Syria. This is the type of stuff we can expect from the Turkish government. What we can be certain is that the Turkish government is going to be making oceans of human blood. Turkey, ultimately, will slaughter Christians by the millions and will create absolute genocide.
