A mob of Muslims tried to murder a Christian man and his wife, when suddenly a Muslim good Samaritan rushed in and rescued the couple. The mob was so upset that they burned alive eight innocent people. Here is the report:
The incident occurred on Monday after a Muslim mob in Zamfara torched the house of a man who tried to save a Christian student accused of blasphemy.
Zamfara State Police Spokesman, Shehu Mohammed, said the mob of Muslim students were enraged over alleged derogatory comments about the Prophet Mohammed by their Christian schoolmate, who they attacked.
He said the victim was rescued by a passerby, a Muslim, who rushed him to the police station for safety.
The mob then burned down the house of the rescuer with eight people inside.
“The man who rescued the student and his wife were not among the dead,” the police spokesman said.
Reacting to the news on his Twitter handle, @MBuhari, the president vowed that the perpetrators of the act would be brought to book.
He said, “I received news of the mob killings in Zamfara with great dismay. It is barbaric and unacceptable. I assure that the law will take its course.
“My prayers are with the families of the victims.
“Under my watch we will work to ensure that there is no place for violence in the name of religion, ethnicity, or in any guise whatsoever.”
The police has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the town while the students’ school has been closed down to prevent further violence.
An AFP correspondent who passed through the town shortly after the riots saw armed soldiers and policemen manning snap checkpoints on the roads.
Students were also seen hurriedly fleeing the town over fears of religious riots.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is almost evenly divided between a mainly-Muslim north and predominantly Christian south.
Ethnic and sectarian clashes have claimed thousands of lives in the country in recent years.
