The Pentagon is conducting an investigation on the US Air Force in order to find out what happened to a veteran named Oscar Rodriguez, who served in the military for thirty-three years, after he was forced out of a base for mentioning God in a speech at Travis Air Force Base.
Rodriguez, who retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 2013, spoke of God in his speech in a patriotic flag holding ceremony, an event that he has participated in many times. First Liberty, a organization that deals with these types of cases, sent a letter to the US Air Force demanding that something be done for the wrongdoing against Rodriguez. Letter pushed the Pentagon to launch an investigation.
Rodriguez gave speeches for military retirement events, and many soldiers admired his talks. When Master Sergeant Charles “Chuck” Roberson witnessed Rodriguez give a speech at a retirement ceremony for another friend, he was greatly moved by his words of faith and asked Rodriguez to speak at his own retirement ceremony.
Senior officials found out that Rodriguez was going to give the speech and that he was also going to mention God and faith in the ceremony. Like the devils they are, they worked very hard to prevent Rodriguez from attending, but were unable to because they had no authority to do so. Rodriguez and Roberson tried to reason with military officials, even offering to put notices that God will be spoken of in the speech, but the officials gave back no response.
When the ceremony finally began, and Rodriguez started speaking, numerous Airmen actually physically assaulted him, forcefully grabbing him out of the ceremony. Air Force officials then drove Rodriguez off the base, according to First Liberty. Rodriguez stated:
To even imagine that I would be removed while the American flag is being unfurled and open—the flag which represents freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press…it’s horrifying …. have given more than three decades of service to the military and made many sacrifices for my country,” Rodriguez added. “To have the Air Force assault me and drag me out of a retirement ceremony simply because my speech included the word ‘God’ is something I never expected from our military.
The Air Force also released a statement:
Air Force personnel may use a flag folding ceremony script that is religious for retirement ceremonies… Since retirement ceremonies are personal in nature, the script preference for a flag folding ceremony is at the discretion of the individual being honored and represents the member’s views, not those of the Air Force. The Air Force places the highest value of the rights of its personnel in matters of religion and facilitates the free exercise of religion by its members.
