The military of Israel just struck Gaza after Hamas launched rockets into Israel. The Israeli defense forces specifically targeted Hamas centers on Wednesday night, in retaliation to a rocket attack that was aimed at Israel on Tuesday.
No reports so far show any casualties on the Gaza side. An Israeli spokeswoman told AFP that while it is not clear where the rocket from Hamas landed, it was “very probably” a rocket. “In response to the projectile fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel earlier, the Israel Air Force targeted a Hamas military compound in the southern Gaza Strip,” the IDF said in a statement on Wednesday, without going into further detail. According to one report from i24News:
The defense establishment believes Islamic Jihad activists to have been behind the attacks in recent days. However, activists affiliated with a Fatah military branch published declared their responsibility in recent attacks, reported Ynet.
Amid the anti-Jerusalem ‘day of rage’ protests, a number of rockets were fired at the Israeli town of Sderot last Friday. One hit a kindergarten breaking a window and another damaged several cars and a home, landing in a street. The third rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system.
On Sunday, the IDF destroyed a Hamas-operated tunnel burrowed from the central Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, using a new detection and demolition system which was the second such operation in recent weeks.
Since US President Donald Trump’s contentious decision last week to recognize the much-coveted holy city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, tensions across the region have flared as Palestinians factions have encouraged an ‘intifada’ or uprising.
With a total of eight rockets fired at the Israeli state, tensions and general unrest across the region has increased.
