A horrifying story has come out of Nigeria. Boko Haram Muslims charged into a church in the village of Attagara; they hacked children to pieces, and slaughtered men and women.
They took one 6 year old boy and threw him into a ditch, and were about to behead him when a Christian man named Sawaltha Wandala grabbed the boy and tried to escape. Five Muslim jihadists stopped him, pried the boy away from his hands and beheaded the child. They then took Sawaltha Wandala and beat him over the head with a rock, leaving him for dead and he lied bleeding profusely.
The next day the jihadists returned and resumed their slaughter, and also conducted attacks on other villages. In the end they slaughtered around 200 people.
As horrifying as the story is, there is a glimmer of hope found within it. Amongst the survivors was one John Yakubu, who fled his village alongside his family. The Muslims seized him, and told him,
You must convert to Islam or else you will die a painful death.
John did not respond with fear, but spiritual and mental toughness, like a good soldier, saying:
You can kill my body, but not my soul
The Muslims began to torture him with knives and blades, cutting his back, only pausing their torment to ask him to convert to Islam. They took an axe and cut his knees all they way to the bone. They took a knife and slashed his head.
John eventually lost consciousness and the terrorists left, probably thinking that he was dead. In the hospital John said:
I have forgiven the Islamic militants, because they did not know what they are doing.
This is truly an inspiring story, and it illustrates what a true Christian is.
